Meet the Team
John A. Macukas, CFP®
Senior Vice President/Investments
"What if your financial goals are precisely defined? What if you had a process in place for actively pursuing those financial goals? And what if you had access to the professionals and strategies to create a financial plan that aligns with those goals? In many ways, you would have set yourself on the path toward optimizing your financial world.”
John Macukas brings more than 20 years of investment and wealth planning experience to providing customized wealth management strategies for high-net-worth individuals and families. He understands that building and preserving wealth requires extensive knowledge and experience, insight and dedication, confidence, and open communication.
Prior to pursuing his investment industry career, John completed an advanced degree as a professional musician and educator, and served as a music industry executive for more than two decades. Lessons learned from managing multi-million-dollar organizational budgets and producing concerts, recordings, and national and international tours include recognizing the value of money, the advantages of detailed planning and preparation, and understanding the needs and lifestyles of high-net-worth individuals.
John earned the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc., which identifies those individuals who have met the experience requirements of the CFP Board, have successfully completed financial planning coursework, and have passed the CFP® Certification Examination.
John is especially proud of the fact that he and his wife and best friend, Mary, have been successful business partners in their financial services practice since 2008. And, he is passionate about giving back to and supporting his community. He has served on the boards of the MS Society, the Hampton Roads Estate Planning Council, the Rotary Clubs of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. He is also a business supporter of the Santa Fe Opera and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.
In his spare time, John enjoys reading about music, history, and philosophy. He enjoys playing guitar, walking with their dogs, learning and observing the night sky, and hiking throughout the foothills of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Mary E. Macukas, CFP®, CPWA®
First Vice President/Investments, Branch Manager
"I understand that wealth management is more than just the wide range of financial services. It is how those services are developed and customized around you that make the difference. This is why my approach to wealth management is built on personal relationships and shaped by an understanding of your needs and aspirations.”
Mary began her career in wealth management during one of the most difficult periods in financial history – 2008. Those difficult months instilled in her the importance of proactive contact with her clients and the critical need for strategies that address not only their tolerance for risk and market volatility, but also the desire for wealth generation and wealth transfer to heirs and charities. Further, she addresses both assets and liabilities, keeping in mind tax efficiency and a mitigation of risk.
Mary's focus is on developing strategies that address the needs and wishes clients have for themselves and those important to them. This may include education funding for their children or grandchildren, retirement planning strategies, cash flow planning, and risk evaluation. Her relationship with clients is collaborative; from the initial conversations about investment strategies.
Prior to joining Stifel in 2020, Mary served her clients at UBS Financial Services. Her desire to become a financial advisor was shaped by having spent more than 20 years working with donors and their advisors to design and manage goals-based charitable estate plans. During this time, she worked at a children's hospital, a university, and a symphonic music organization. She holds Series 7, 9 & 10, and 66 securities licenses, as well as life, health, and variable insurance licenses (including long-term care and annuities).
In 2012, she attained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification, and in 2019, she earned the Certified Private Wealth Advisor® designation. The CPWA® certification is designed for experienced financial advisors who seek the latest, most advanced knowledge and breadth of specialized skills necessary to address the sophisticated needs of high-net-worth clients.
Mary, along with her husband and business partner, John, live in Santa Fe with their four-legged menagerie. She is proud to be active in the community, serving as chairwoman of the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation board of directors and CHRISTUS St. Vincent Hospital board of directors. Previously, she has served on the boards of The Cancer Foundation for New Mexico, Solace Crisis Treatment Center, Norfolk SPCA, Hampton Roads Estate Planning Counsel, and Hampton Roads Gift Planning Counsel.
